I was born in Huaraz, a beautiful town surrounded by mountains and close to the snow-covered Huascarán, the highest in Peru and the second in South America. The sky is almost always a deep blue and the Sun is generous as its people. My childhood was rocked in 1970 by one of the most devastating earthquakes in our national history. The city was destroyed. One of the neighboring cities was completely buried by an avalanche from Huascaran and is now considered the world’s largest cemeteries. Many families of the few survivors migrated, but not ours by the decision of my father, who always instilled a courageous attitude to all the circumstances of life in us.
